When we hear network, many of us think about the Internet. How do you see the development of this network from your research point of view?
With the birth of the Internet and its development at the end of the sixties, a theory was needed to modelize the communication networks.  The main objective of this theory was to improve the performance and functions of the networks. The research field is focused on the network connections, where the knowledge is dispersed in different fields, such as: electric engineering, all the software aspects, the operational research, the statistics, the economy, etc. and there is the need to bridge all of them. Nowadays, our main objective is to define and investigate the paradigms in which the following Internet generation will be based.

What will be the future in Internet’s development?
To predict the development of the infrastructures will be easier. It seems that in the future the small and intelligent devices that will allow access to the Internet in an easy way will be a main trend. It will be more difficult to predict the applications and services, because in the last decade, these have been surprising us very much: the e-mail, the search engines technology, the blogs, the social networks, the exchange of music and videos, etc.   Most probably, new applications will be developed for mobile devices that will surprise us very much.

Within your work and research carrier, what has it meant for you the job at Ikerbasque?
After graduating in Engineering in Pamplona, I spent 10 years learning and working in foreign countries, mainly in the USA, France and Holland. Before Ikerbasque was created, it was nearly impossible to find a job with appropriate conditions in the Basque Country for a researcher that had been educated abroad. I had a stable job as a researcher in France and I was starting to think that I would never be able to return to the Basque Country.  Therefore, Ikerbasque and BCAM have given me the opportunity to work as a researcher with appropriate conditions in my birth place. For me, this is very valuable, because as a researcher I consider the contribution to society very important and as a Basque person I feel a sense of satisfaction out of my contribution to my homeland.
