The Basque Country (Autonomous Community) came tenth in Spain when comparing the number of scientific documents listed in the ISI Thompson Reuters "Web of Science" database, to the number of inhabitants (INE - National Institute of Statistics).
Under this indicator, Communities such as Andalusia, Catalonia and Valencia achieved negative results, largely due to large populations and high levels of scientific specialization as compared to other productive sectors.
Regions like Navarra, Cantabria, Asturias or Aragon, to mention the major players, obtained good scores thanks to sustained investment in the Universities Sector and R&D+i, and due to its relative importance in these regions’ economic model. The challenge for the Basque Country now lies in continuing progress in generating and disseminating knowledge, to catch up with the leading regions in this field.
