Ikerbasque: Sustainability

Ikerbasque will destinate the 0,7% of its budget to fund cooperation projects

Ikerbasque dedicates for the fourth consecutive year the 0,7% of its budget to fund several cooperation projects. Intermon Oxfam, ICAVI4all, The Food Bank of Bizkaia and SED will lead the selected projects, which will receive about 16.000€ each of them.

One of the strategic goals of Ikerbasque is to be a socially responsible foundation, and that is why it has developed a social, economic and enviromental sustainability strategy which includes dedicating the 0,7% of the budget to finance cooperation projects.

Through a public call, Ikerbasque foundation offered for the fourth consecutive year funding both for projects in less developed countries and for local collectives in a vulnerable situation.

Research Fellow, the new program for young researchers, receives 300 applications in its first call

Ikerbasque Foundation has received 300 applications for its first Research Fellow call. This initiative has been specifically designed to attract and retain in the Basque Country below 40 years expertsfrom all areas of knowledge in order to create a scientists and researchers pool.

The first phase of the Ikerbasque 2011 call for proposals receives over 400 applications from global scientists for 20 research posts in the Basque Country

Euskadi's attractiveness as a destination for scientists and researchers has been demonstrated by the first phase of the IKERBASQUE 2011 call for proposals to recruit a total of 20 international experts to various universities and R&D Centres in the country. In the first quarter of 2011 alone, 427 applications were received - 21 times the number of places available.

In front of a full house at the Alhondiga (Bilbao), researcher Tanja Schultz presented her voice recognition system at the conference on Speech Processing from a Multi-lingual Perspective. This system can give voice to movements of the mouth muscles, i.e. lip reading out loud, without the need to emit sounds when speaking and to communicate with another person.

I am interested in studies on proteins that participate in organising and maintaining genetic material in cells.

Your research focuses on structural biology. Can you explain exactly what that means?

Structural Biology is the study of how the atoms in a biomolecule order themselves in space by adopting a three dimensional structure, and how this structure determines their biological function. Biomolecules can be proteins, nucleic acids, lipids or sugars, but the proteins are the main research subject as they are more diverse and relevant in biological processes. Each protein forms a specific structure according to its amino-acid sequencing, and although there may be similarities between the structures of different proteins, in general there is an enormous variety. This variety is what enables them to perform very diverse functions in the organism.
